Stevie sighed as she dropped her bag by her chair. This was going to be a long shift. Last night she was up all night, taking a few short 10 minute breaks to nap, with a patient who needed a complete set of tests run. X-rays, blood tests, tissue samples. He was not in the best of shape and was sent to her for a final opinion. Stevie had finally diagnosed the issue and been able to take a two hour nap before dragging herself to work the next shift. Sure, she didn't HAVE to stay there, but something in the patient's eyes reminded her of her brother so many years ago. She was compelled to assist in whatever way she could.
Her eyes strayed over her desk and found the picture of her and Leon's eleventh year anniversary, last year. Leon had taken her out to a formal dinner and ballroom dancing after. A smile tugged at the edges of her mouth, gently pulling them in a serene smile. Next to that was Trinity starting college. Stevie was lost in the memory of sending Trin away where she wouldn't be able to greet her every morning before school. A single tear came to her eye but didn't roll over until she looked at the last picture of Spike. It was the last picture she had of him. He was standing next to Leon, both men in Tux's, sending Trin to her first Homecoming dance.
A sound behind her yanked her mercilessly out of the memory. The other nurses were filing in and heading to the locker rooms to change into their scrubs. Stevie hastily wiped her tear away and nodded a morning greeting to them. She turned and walked to her [Received Files] and went through the clients that needed tending. She had her usual Samuel S Pearl who had reconstructive knee surgery and needed to learn how to walk on it again as well as Charlotte T Keens who was coming out of spinal surgery and needed to walk the pool until she could get the hang of it again.

Another on her list today was an unfamiliar name. Faythe Vernier. Her history was vast and her conditions were many. She was here scheduled for a blood test. This was her first time at this facility specifically.

Stevie read over the unfamiliar report, she still had a few hours until she was supposed to begin the Physical Therapy sessions. She took a thermos out of her bag and took a long swig of the warm brown steamy liquid. She made a face and put the thermos back. It seemed she had added one too many shots to her coffee. She tucked the folder under her arm and exited the Nurse's room, heading to the exam room.
"Good morning, Ms Vernier. My name is Dr Stevie-Rae Sudeki and i'll be taking care of you today. I see it's your first time here. Would you like something to drink before we get started on your blood work?"
Her smile was genuine and her amber eyes filled with warmth.

Faythe blinked upon hearing the name of her physician from meeting Leon Sudeki in a previous encounter she wondered what their relationship was.
She shook her head in response to her offer of the drink.

Stevie took in the girl's silence for anxiety and smiled.
"How are you feeling today?"
She turned to get her necessary items and put a small white washcloth over the needles. Sometimes not seeing them helped the more squeamish patients.

She smiled gently and raised a hand shaking it side ways in a so-so manner.

Stevie placed the tray on a movable table on wheels.
"Would you like to talk about it while i work? Which arm would you prefer? Can i see your arms to check the veins?"
If allowed, Stevie would gently take the girls arms and lightly prod the vein in each arm with her forefinger to see which one was easiest and would therefore cause less pain.

There was a raspy chuckle that was like a whisper with sand coming from Faythe she pointed to Stevie's clip board right where the disability of Faythe being mute would be written

Stevie read over the file again and sighed, dragging a hand down her face.
"I'm sorry. I must have missed that. I can't sign to save my life but i can read it. Would that be alright with you?"
She would read over the file one last time, making sure that there wasn't anything about allergies before getting the iodine to clean the puncture site.
"This will be a bit cold, dear."

Faythe rolled up her billowy white sleeve and stevie might have been able to tell the amount of scar tissue in the usual injection sights were spotty but plenty. Some old and some newer but it was apparent Faythe had been a long time patient and was absolutely numb to these kinds of things. Nothing seemed to phase her or bother her. Either that or stevie could assume she was a drug addict... Who knows.
While stevie would begin working on drawing Faythe's blood the woman would put her hands around her throat and trace down her bronchial tubes and in her lungs she'd clear her throat and stevie might have noted how wet a it might have sounded. Faythe only having one hand free instead of writing the fact she was getting over bronchitis was trying to show her.

Stevie wiped over the iodine with an alcohol swap and inserted a butterfly needle so she wouldn't have to pull at Faythe's skin while she filled the five vials of blood. She quickly placed a cotton swab over the needle, removed the needle, applied pressure to the wound, and wrapped coach tape over her elbow in a eternity wrap as to allow movement in her elbow.
"Do you have a prescription for the... bronchitis?"
She tossed the used needle into the used bin and spun around back around to face Faythe.

Faythe nodded and reached into a pocket to pull out the steroid for the infection and such. It still had another two weeks worth of doses.
But now her hands were free she began to write in a little handy notebook she pulled from another pocket.
"I've also been taking over the counter syrup for the congestion and cough. The fever spells are beginning to disappear all together. Which is helping me work again."

Stevie read the note and nodded.
"If you find the symptoms don't dissipate within two weeks, please come see me again. I might suggest a stronger over the counter lozenge if the pain in your throat persists. Make sure you are resting, and all that."
She gave another smile.

Faythe gave her an "okay" symbol by making a circle with her finger and thumb and sending her other fingers straight upright.
"Do you have a relation to a Leon Sudeki?

Stevie smiles wide as she read the note.
"Oh yes, he is my husband. Are you familiar with him?"
Stevie is wondering whether the girl knows sign at all.
