Stevie took a breath and went to get her sweet tea. When she came back she carefully set it down and pulled out her chair and took a seat. "I know you said you were saving up money to get a place of your own. How's that going?" Beating around the bush....

As soon as the question was asked, WR knew exactly where this was going, but they would also beat around the bush, thinking of how to respond to the question when it finally arose.
"Ya know, fine I guess. Anything is better than what I got." It was sad, but it was true.

Stevie sat back in her chair and started at her fork. "You could... stay in that extra room we have..." She didn't look up. Coward. "...If you wanted to."

Aaaaand there it was. They knew it was coming, but even with that knowledge beforehand they still didn't know how to respond to it.
They'd blink a few times as they processed the question.
"Fine, you win." They'd say after a few moments. That... wasn't quite what they meant to say, but it was all that would come out.

Stevie blinked. She didn't think that sounded like a 'ok i will.' "You don't have to if you don't want to. I know you are a very capable young person. You'd have to be to survive this city alone. Not the whole place is fluffy pillows and home baked meals. I know that. I've just grown overly fond of you. I'll understand if you'd rather not live here. I wouldn't hold it against you." She felt the sting of rejection in her chest and turned her head to cough in her shoulder, blinking back tears. She wouldn't let WR see that. It wasn't fair to them.

"Listen, it's not that I don't want to," They'd quickly interject, rubbing the back of their head.
"Just can't say I'm fully comfortable with it, ya know? It's kinda hard to explain, and honestly, I don't think you'd get it."

Stevie whipped her head back around, her eyes misty. "If it's about being given something for free, you can pay whatever you think is fair. I'd just rather not see your face appear on the news one night. Training with Leon is one matter. Not a lot of people know but being his- Working with him puts a target on your back." She'd pause and raise a shaky hand to lift her glass to take a sip. She'd set it back down with a sigh. "We've lost one child. While I know I'm not your mother, I can't help but feel a kindred spirit like that of one for you."

WR would just... fall silent. Despite all of Stevie's mom-like comments and actions, they had no clue they meant that much to her, and she wasn't the first to express concern about Leon's apprenticeship.
They would exchange no words with Stevie, and in fact, would proceed to do something they would likely never do again.
WR would stand up and plop themself down next to Stevie, wrapping an arm around her shoulder while leaning onto the other.
"I'm sorry."

Stevie was shook. She leaned her head briefly on WR's head and took in a shaky breath. "I'm the one who should be sorry. I know you can take care of yourself." A tear would leak out of her eye and fall on her arm and she sniffled. "I shouldn't have asked. I don't want you thinking I think I'm your mom and can boss you around. I just--" She wouldn't let herself continue. She was like a broken record.

WR would just sit in silence as Stevie let it out, keeping their head on her shoulder even as they spoke.
"You might as well be. My mom... didn't love me very much, and I fucking hate her, hence why I never talk about her. She was never there for me when I needed her yet expected everything from me knowing full and well what dad was doing to me while she never thought to stop him, it was all about her and Sylvye. I was just the fuckup cleaning up the mess."
They'd pause briefly to adjust their sling.
"Then there's you, constantly going out of your way to make sure I'm okay with literally no reward. Sounds like a mom to me."

Stevie shifter her weight and turned her head to look at WR. "Mind if I hug you this time, then?" If allowed, she would [gently] throw her arms around WR, careful not to move the shoulder at all. "I think I'll take the job then. If you'll have me."

WR would just nod and embrace Stevie as she went in for the hug. It was a little awkward around their sling, but it was nice.
"Bring it on." They'd say with a smile.

Stevie hugged for a minute. Another tear landed on top of WR's head and Stevie giggled a bit before pulling back, sniffling loudly. "Uhm. We should probably eat. Or the roast will get cold. Microwaves can only heat so much."

"Right." They'd say, holding their smile as they sat up in their seat.
They weren't expecting that twist of events...

Stevie was grinning. "So, you really do want to stay? And not just because I asked?"
