"It's going to rain." Dove spoke, shuffling her old oracle cards on the blue fabric of the old tablecloth, her posture loose and unconcerned. Ariadne, an arm around one of the front legs of the colorful tailgate tent, pressed her cheek against the cold metal as she gazed up at the clear, starless sky overhead.
"How can you tell?" she asked, twirling one of the rings around her finger. She was worried it would ruin their chance to make some cash. It wasn't everyday they were able to land a stall at a festival like this-- they were lucky if they got away with selling their wares and services out on the street without getting in trouble for it (something about permits... Ariadne never paid attention), so when they were presented with this opportunity, well... they couldn't turn it away, right? "There's not a cloud in the sky, Dove," the blue-haired woman spoke, looking over her shoulder at her companion.
Dove was a women in her late thirties, high cheekbones and long, black hair pulled into a tight braid that coiled down to the middle of her back. She pulled her sheer shawl tighter over her dark shoulders as she leaned back in her chair. "You can feel it in the air. It's heavy... like it's waiting for something." She wasn't often wrong, and now that Ariadne thought about it... she could feel the humidity in the air, somehow. She'd be inclined to believe the older woman if it weren't for the fact that the night was clear as crystal. It'd be a perfect day for stargazing... if the light pollution from the city hadn't made the night sky so bright.
"I'm sure things will be fine."
Ariadne had a few pieces of jewelry she'd made recently, and she was so anxious to sell them today. She felt so much positive energy this morning, she was certain this would be a lucky day for her.
--
Apparently, some private middle school held a midsummer festival a few weekends in June, right after kids got out for the summer. A few rides and games, lots of artisans coming to sell their crafts, a few musical performances. Ariadne doubted this was the busiest night-- there had to be some other event going on in town this evening. People came and went, but she expected it to be significantly more packed than it was. The booth she shared with Dove consisted of three tables forming a U-shape under their tent, with Dove giving fortunes and flirting with customers as she sat on the other side of the middle table. Ariadne's jewelry and weird trash sculptures lined the two parallel tables on the side, odd knickknacks, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings made of recycled materials and petty (but pretty) stones she'd found. It'd been a while since they were at a port town, too, so she had gone to The Docks and managed to find some shells she fashioned into charming pendants.
Ariadne was at the front of the tent, beckoning forth passersby at every opportunity, boasting about fine, foreign jewelry and fortune readings from a REAL Medium! She'd had some buyers, now an hour or two into the evening, but not nearly as much as she'd hoped for. The night was still young, though. Anything could happen.
"Come and get your fortune told by the lovely Dove! The cards never lie! Fine, hand-made jewelry and trinkets for an affordable price!"

"You've reached the voice mail of Valo Morei. Sorry, I'm too busy to take your call right no-" *click*
His voice mail. Again.
Haji would sigh, closing his phone and sliding it back into his pant pocket. His older brother was often hard to reach these days, and he barely even saw him back at the office. Sometimes, it would be days before the two had any contact, which meant that Haji was flying solo a lot of the time. He tended to handle cases with the help of another detective at the firm, Taro, but his was company that was best taken in smaller doses.
Haji's current case was rather unusual, but thankfully it didn't entirely require Valo's aid. A woman wanted to track what her son would doing at a festival, not truly believing him to be there as a volunteer or anything. It was a strange case, but he was set to work there in one of the coming days. Haji felt it best to arrive a day or so early to scout the area out, learn the lay of the land so to speak. It'd help to know what was where, even though some things would change from time to time. And from there, once he figured things out, it would be far easy to do reconnaissance and follow his mark within the crowds.
Or so he hoped.
The air felt somewhat heavy today, and it made him regret dressing up in his suit, vest, and coat. His coat was hanging off of his shoulders, and his arms weren't through the sleeves at all, the sleeves themselves being rolled up. His long, dark brown hair was tied up in a ponytail, and while it looked disheveled from the front, one could tell just by looking at him that his hair was rather well kept.
Haji was walking through the festival, people watching, taking note of how things worked around here, the locations things were in, the things people typically did at these. They didn't have things like this where he grew up, so this was all rather new and somewhat exciting to him. Still, he didn't think he should spend too much time trying to have fun here when it was for something that would be considered business at a later date.
After some time, he would pass by and hear a voice calling into the crowd that simply walked by. He was trying to pay it no mind, but he heard things that piqued his interest. Get his fortune told? Cards that never lied? Haji would look towards the source of the voice, seeing a blue-haired woman calling out to people. From first glance, they didn't look like they would know of Ebisu or any of the Kami, but his curiosity was high and he wondered what foreign fortunes were like.
After spending some time deliberating on what he should do, and taking a quick glance at his wallet, Haji would take a deep breath and approach the blue-haired woman.
"Hello, miss. I believe you said something about fortunes and trinkets?" He asked, politely and inquisitively. A bit of fun and wonder couldn't hurt, could it?

Ariadne saw someone approach their booth-- a young man dressed way too formal for this sort of event.
"Yes! I make all these jewelry and trinkets myself," she smiled brightly, putting one arm around his shoulder as she drew him into their tent, her other hand gesturing at the items for sale. "Perfect gifts for a lady friend, yes? You're sure to woo any girl you give one of my beautiful clear quartz pendants to." She winked, moving away to collect one of the aforementioned pendants to show him. Maybe she could sell him on something, let him browse a bit, find something he'd want.
Dove clearly had other plans though, as she shuffled through her cards with practiced precision. "Come here and let me read your future, sir," the woman spoke, voice low and exotic in a way Ariadne's melodic chiming could never be. Dove had a knack for drawing people in, but lacked excitement and enthusiasm, like she was a quiet painting on the wall that you can't help but turn your gaze towards. "Sixty dollars for a card reading, twenty for palm. I'll give you a 25% discount if you buy one of Ariadne's creations."
"Advice is free." The younger woman chimed in.

Ah, this woman was nothing if not pushy. Haji certainly did not expect to be pulled into the tent in such a forward manner. It was a little stuffy in the tent, as to be expected, but he was immediately drawn by the various wares that they had.
"Ah, I have no such thing in my life..." He stated, putting his hands up dismissively. He was new to Anthem, and a lady friend wasn't exactly on his list of priorities for the time being.
She claimed that she made the trinkets herself? It was certainly impressive. Simple, yet pretty trinkets lay before him. They may have been nothing, but Haji believed that something self-made was an excellent tribute to one's Kami, though he was fairly certain these weren't made for such a reason. It wasn't the time or place to ask, either.
Ariadne's creations? So the blue-haired woman's name was Ariadne? A unique name, if Haji had ever heard one. It stood out, but he opted to not push the matter of names. She was a saleswoman more or less, and he was a client. There tended to be no room for names or personal matters in these affairs.
"Advice?" Haji repeated what she said. "Ah, well I have never done any of this before..."
Sixty dollars was rather steep. But he had just been paid recently, and he was rather curious what this was all about. If he could learn some sort of fortune beneficial to his troubles, it will have been a small price to pay. On the other hand, Valo taught him to be weary of con artists. He called them 'telemarketers.' Haji didn't know what they were exactly, but he was opt to be careful in any case.
"I would like to give this an honest try." He began, noting that he should probably do the discount. He was rather entranced by these hand-made charms anyway. And he would turn towards Ariadne. "Could you tell me about some of these trinkets?"

"Of course! I'd be happy to show you what I have."
So he was new to this kind of thing? What, did he live under a rock? No matter, a customer is a customer, and Ariadne thought that this was her chance to make both herself and Dove look really good. So many people have poor impressions of mediums and fortune tellers, accusing them of being scams and con artists. Her family's trade and talents weren't scams, and to find someone who didn't see the stain that fakes had left on the trade was a blessing.
"First time, is it?" Dove gave a dark chuckle, clearly amused with herself, manicured nails tapping on the deck before her. "We'll be gentle, I promise."
While Dove went to shuffle two different decks, Ariadne took the stage, a gentle hand going to the man's shoulder to direct his attention to her wares. Think, think... If he doesn't have a girlfriend, maybe I can sell him something more masculine? She went over to where she had a few bracelets on display. Aura beads always sold pretty well, but lava-rock beads were more versatile. Neither were the cheapest option, but wooden beads and leather wraps weren't as eye-grabbing.
She started with the aura beads, delicate hands picking up a few bracelets of various colors, their holographic sheen reflecting the lights into soft prismatic hues. "These are mystic aura bracelets, made with glass beads that seem to glow with color, even in broad daylight. They're meant to balance one's aura and maintain a healthy energy. Ten dollars a piece." Ariadne could remember how expensive the beads were to buy, but she'd be damned if they weren't all sorts of pretty to look at. They were more on the feminine side, so she understood if they didn't appeal to the man's tastes.
Ariadne put the bracelets back in their place before moving to the lava stone bracelets right beside them, picking up a few of the black, porous bracelets for him to see. "And these innocuous little guys are made from lava stone. Not only are they simple, stylish, and inoffensive, but you can infuse them with essential oils like lavender, eucalyptus, or peppermint for aromatherapy and healing purposes. Twelve dollars."
She put the beads down before moving to the necklaces nearby. A lot of them were more feminine or spiritual-- crystal pendants and charms made from pieces of broken glass, ceramic, and pottery-- filed down and rounded to prevent injury, of course. There were long, beaded necklaces made of natural stone, and more lava stone pieces that resembled their bracelet counterparts, but with a considerably wider circumference. No... these wouldn't do.
The woman moved on light footsteps to the other side of the tent, eyes glossing over the items there before she spotted what she was looking for. Leather cord necklaces, simple and casual.
Ariadne picked up a few in various shades of brown leather, the cords wrapping around crystalline glass to make a charming pendant. "Men tend to prefer these-- something about leather that guys just really enjoy. The crystals here are made from recycled glass. Six dollars. Nice, yeah?" She smiled before setting them back down.
Her hand waved around the other pieces, before she felt herself pulled to the wish bracelets she'd made the night before. She picked up a few, bashfully shrugging as she showed him. Single-strand bracelets woven into colorful beads and charms. "These might not seem like much, but kids love them. The different colors in the beads represent 'wishes'-- a want for love, money, good health, that sorta thing-- and so long as you're wearing the bracelet, the energy will attract whatever you wish for. Neat, right? Only two dollars. I can tell you more about the colors if you're interested."
She set them back down, going to lean against the table as she waited for his thoughts or opinions. "So? Anything catch your eye?" There were other things for sale, but she'd only showed him what she thought were the most harmless purchases, easy for someone who didn't know the mystical meanings behind some of the items she sold.

Haji's curiosity was certainly heightened as Ariadne showed him various trinkets they had for sale. The first one was meant to balance one's aura and keep their energy healthy, and he was in awe. They weren't too dissimilar from omamori, and it was fascinating seeing what other people used to bring luck, health, and prosperity into their lives.
The beads representing wishes spoke to him, reminding him of something he would do back home whenever he visited shrines. He looked at each and every one that the woman showed him. Everything seemed like it would bring good fortune... but it made him wonder how such powerful trinkets could be so cheap. He didn't wish to be a cynic, and thought that perhaps these people just wanted to spread good fortune. Money was a necessity to live and get by, no matter who you were, after all.
There was some quiet deliberation on his part as Haji stood there, his hand moving to his chin as he thought on everything she had shown him. Silently, he began to turn some numbers in his head. After a while, he'd pull his wallet out.
"If I am correct, thirty dollars... I would like to take them all." He would say, pulling out his phone and pointing to a small charm hanging from it. "They remind me a lot of omamori. Charms from back home. Though they are not of my home, I think it would be wise to take you up on this offer for all of those that you have just shown me."
He would slide his phone back into his pocket, looking at Ariadne with a small smile.
"Ah, and if that is okay, I would like to have my fortunes told as well."
Haji was about to spend a lot of money, but there were things he had to know. If they could tell him here and now, then great. If not, at least he wouldn't have to wonder 'What if?' at the end of the day.

Ariadne was nothing short of shocked, frozen where she stood, to see him agree to buy what she'd just shown him. She'd expected him to buy one, maybe two things, not one of everything she'd just presented. Damn, maybe she should've showcased other things too, she could be making one hell of a sale if she'd planned this out better.
She was shaken out of her thoughts when he took out his phone, showing her an interesting, foreign charm. "Omamori..." She repeated, fascinated. It was quaint, but the fabric of the charm was pretty. Was it Chinese? Japanese? She was admittedly rather oblivious to practices of mysticism and spirituality from Southeast Asia, so seeing something new piqued her curiosity. "I've never heard of those before." The woman tucked a lock of blue hair behind one ear.
"Yeah, of course. Stars-- I'd give you a reading for free," She gave a light laugh. "Normally, that's Dove's field, and I don't have my cards with me right now, but if I see you again, you can ask my cards whatever you want." Her smile was bright and appreciative.
"Dove can give you your reading in a minute if you don't mind paying, but first--" She moved off the table she was leaning against and went over to Dove's table, sitting on the surface before swinging her legs over to the other side, wrinkling the table cloth in the process.
The older woman was quick to smooth the cloth back over, scooting her seat over so that Ariadne could get something from under the table.
Ariadne popped back up not a moment later with a sheet of notebook paper and a metal box. She set the box down on the table before reaching down once more to get a pencil. She beckoned the young man over and slide him the pencil and paper across the table, leaning forward on her elbows, her finger tracing shapes into the fabric of the table cloth.
"Do you mind writing down how to spell 'omamori'? I'm curious and want to do some research, but I'd have no idea how to spell it," She gave a bashful chuckle.

Ariadne seemed rather enamored by the existence of his own charm, which in itself made Haji happy. She also offered him a free reading, which was unexpected. He felt he should be sure to try and stop by again if they're here in the coming days to take her up on that.
"Ah, I am extremely grateful. Thank you." He would say, bowing his head in appreciation. Card readings had him extremely interested, and he was curious what he could learn from spending that time with her, were it to happen.
Ariadne made her way over to the table where Dove sat, scooting herself over it before crouching down. She pulled out paper, a metal box, and a pencil. He was surprised when she asked him to write down 'omamori', but he would smile and make his way over to the table.
"Of course not." He'd reply, taking the pencil and making sure the paper was secure before he started to write. The seven letters would be written out, his handwriting considerably nicer than what was probably expected of him, and afterwards, he would start to scribble something next to it. "So here is the word 'omamori' spelled out in traditional letters. And this right here..." He'd tap the paper with the pencil, "...is how it is written in Kanji, a form of Japanese writing."
Naturally, she wouldn't be able to read it off of the bat, but he felt it would be nice to show her that much. Still, she said she wanted to do some research into it. It would be prudent to let her know what else she could expect to see when looking up any Japanese words.
"There are various types of omamori, giving one blessings on their luck, fortune, or happiness for example. Your trinkets reminded me of this, so I was happy to take the ones you showed me."
Oh, that reminded him. Haji would set the pencil down and open his wallet, retrieving the thirty dollars from it before extending his hand.
"Thank you for enlightening me."

This man was so polite and considerate that Ariadne felt genuinely touched. So he was Japanese... she couldn't say with confidence that she'd interacted with many people from Japan, so she certainly found herself curious. She'd need to make a trip to the library tomorrow to do further research on omadori. To see that this man believed in the power of good fortune and luck made her heart light-- she'd come across too many cynics and skeptics in her time, and meeting a like-minded stranger was a breath of fresh air.
"Oh, you haven't seen nothin' yet, honey." She winked with a smile, hand reaching to accept the cash, the bangles on her wrists chiming. She counted the bills quickly, mouthing numbers to herself as she calculated the math in her head.
"Alright, looks like that's in order," she spoke, opening the metal box to place the cash inside. "Go grab the items you've picked and I'll put them in a bag for you." Ariadne wasn't going to assume she knew what colors he wanted, so she'd let him pick for himself.
"After that, you can come sit in this chair across from Dove, and she'll get you started."
She took the paper he'd written 'omadori' on, smiling to herself as she folded it and put it in the pocket of her skirt.

The 'honey' caught him off-guard, but he paid it hardly any mind. A small smile formed on his lips, but that would be all. Haji would go around to the wares as Ariadne instructed, picking out the objects which he had just purchased. For the most part, he had picked the same ones she had shown him previously, finding interest in them. He would do some research of his own later, curious about their ability that she stated they had.
As Haji brought them back to Ariadne, he would sit down in the chair across from the two of them. He fished his wallet back out, doing the math in his head. This meant he got a discount, based on what the older woman had said earlier, right? Twenty-five percent? Which should bring the aforementioned readings to fourty-five dollars and fifteen dollars respectively... not bad, all things considered.
"I am sorry if it is a bit much, but I was wondering if it were possible to do both of the readings you mentioned before."
He didn't mind the cost, if it meant he could learn a little bit about himself or some potential future. In the worst case, he could reimburse himself through his brother later, being an on-the-job expense in a way. Not that it would fly if he went into the specifics.

"Oh-- Yeah, of course! That's no problem." Ariadne grabbed a brown paper bag and a sheet of stickers as he passed her the items he picked. She placed the items within, securing the bag by folding the top over a few times before securing it with a sticker of a blue star. That'd do it.
Dove set her two card decks to the side and pulled her shawl closer over her shoulders before clasping her hands in front of her on the table.
"This is your first time, yes? I think it'd be best to start with a palm reading, if you wouldn't mind putting both your hands facing up on the table. I will walk you through this process. What is your name, sir?" Dove spoke in her quiet, low voice.
Ariadne would hop up and sit on the surface of the table, one leg pulled up partially so that she was turned more towards Dove and Haji, eager to watch the exchange.

Haji would smile as Ariadne bagged his items, watching her secure it with a blue star not unlike her hair color. He would make a note to grab it later, turning to face the one known as Dove as she gave him instructions. A palm reading first sounded fair enough, as it sounded like the simpler of the two.
"My first time, yes." He would repeat, placing his hands face up in front of her as instructed. His hands were well taken care of, but a little scarred, and held a certain toughness to them. There would be callouses on certain areas of his palm, rigid from the years of using a katana. He wondered how easy it would be to see what he had been through, and he was more curious about what he didn't yet know about.
"My name is Haji Morei."
The name he wore in his shame. He wondered if it meant anything to this reading, or if his birth given name would've made any difference.

Haji Morei... Yeah, Ariadne thought it sounded Japanese, but it's not like she had much to go off of.
"That's a cool name," she smiled. "Cooler than anything I've ever heard, anyway." It was an honest compliment. She wasn't sure if it was a common or ordinary name where he's from, but she thought it sounded awesome regardless. She wondered if it had some sort of meaning, kinda like how hers meant 'most holy'-- she made a mental note to ask him about it if she ever got the chance.
"I usually start by observing the shape of the hands, since it usually says a lot about an individual's personality," Dove spoke, taking his left hand in hers.
"You have what we call a water-type hand," the index finger of her other hand would trace the circumference of his palm. "Your palm is a rectangular shape and your fingers are long." She'd then use her thumb to gently feel the surface and texture of his hand. "Despite the marks of work, your hands are soft." She paused. "People with water hands tend to be intuitive and in-tune with their emotions. Some are driven by their emotions, while others are better at controlling them. They also tend to be creative, which doesn't always mean in an artistic sense, but creativity and imagination can be present in all aspects of life. It could mean that you are good at coming up with ideas or thinking outside the box. People with these hands often have a very keen intuition, so I'd trust my instincts if I were you."
Ariadne chimed in, a hand going to trace the perimeter of his palm as Dove had done earlier. "He could also have a bit of the philosophic type, right? Here, his hands are wider at the base, and the shape of his fingers are more pointed, no?"
Dove hummed for a moment. "It's less prominent. It could mean he's internal and analytical as well, but the shape of the fingers isn't dissimilar from the conic type, which reaffirms his keen intuition and sharp instincts."
The older woman redirected her attention to Haji. "Sometimes a person can have more than one type-- hands are very complex, and a person can have traits from different types, though generally I tend to describe one of the four-elemental types when doing a cursory reading, it tends to be easier for people to understand. Do you have any questions so far?"

"Ah, thank you." Haji would reply to Ariadne's compliment, a small smile on his face briefly. It was the first time anyone had called the name he wore 'cool', but it was certainly nice to see someone disassociate its shameful connotation from it. In a way, her light compliment made him feel better. Here in the west, he was doubtful anyone would know the burden he carried upon himself, but he didn't wish to retreat from his dream of redeeming himself just because this land didn't recognize him for what he was. It would be a dishonorable escape.
"Water-type..."
He would repeat after Dove spoke, and he would listen to everything that she said. Haji was admittingly in awe at how well versed she was at reading his hand so quickly. He was also pleasantly surprised to see how similar their beliefs were in terms of his own when it came to elemental association. Sui was associated with emotions and flexibility, practically exactly as Dove had described to him. It was interesting to him how people in different places could learn things so differently yet so similarly.
If anything, it convinced him as to the legitimacy of this pair, if he had harbored any doubts beforehand.
"Interesting... in my line of work, those are exactly the kinds of traits that I am to need in order to succeed. Intuition and instincts... thinking outside of the box... philosophic..." Haji noted, knowing full well he hadn't told them his job before the reading. "It is incredible that you can tell this much from looking at my hands. I did not know the elements could be seen in even this."
He took note that she said four elements, when interestingly, he had learned there were five. It was simple enough to discern which was missing, but now wasn't the time to bring it up.
"Have you been doing this a long time? I take it palm reading can tell you a lot about a person before you even get to know them."
He hoped that was the case, anyway. For the most part, he personally felt like she was accurate in her assessment about him, from a mere look at his hand at that. He could've been hyping himself up, as much as he tried to remain humble.
"I am curious, can you discern anything about fate, or a glimpse at a future?"

Ariadne wasn't surprised that Dove had been right about what she said so far-- she often was.
"Dove's just getting started, silly. Be patient," she spoke.
The older woman nodded and responded to his questions. "I've been doing this for nearly twenty years, so I consider myself more experienced than most. I do not read minds, and I cannot accurately predict the future down to details, but I'm good at reading signs and interpreting messages from the Gods. Both your palms and the cards will say their own things about fate, but palms tend to give a broader picture about your life and you as an individual, while the cards will respond to specific questions. If you're eager to see what the future holds, I encourage patience."
Dove's thumb would stroke the inside of his palm as she continued. "For men, we start with the left hand, as it can tell us much about what the Gods have gifted you with at birth, showing us your life as the Divines intend. The right hand tells us about what you have done with what you've been given. The difference between the two may help you better understand yourself."
A finger would go to trace the prominent lines in his palm. "Most things can be found in the major lines and creases. This here," she traced the line that starts between the thumb and index finger, curving down to the base of the hand, "is the Life line. It reveals information about your health and wellbeing. Your line here is long and deep, telling us that you are generally of a healthy body and mind, well-balanced all around. See how the line isn't sharp and defined, but instead looks more like a chain or a rope? This is typically a sign of that your life path will take you in many directions."
She moved up to the topmost line, extending horizontally from under the index finger, towards the pinky finger. "Your Heart line governs the realm of love and emotion. It's long, which means you have a certain, ah," she paused, thinking of the right word.
"Warmth, I think?"
"Yes, thank you. It sometimes means naivety idealism as well, though not always. The line is very clear and deep, moreso than the other major lines, which says that you are sincere and deeply respectful, considerate of those around you. You may feel a sense of security and peace with your own emotions. The line curving means that you are perhaps sensitive and intuitive, open to those you are close to."
Dove's finger drifted to the line just below that, between the heart line and the life line. "The Head line, sometimes known as the Wisdom line, can tell us about your mental and intellectual landscape. Like many of your other lines on this hand, this one is also long, which means you probably have a good memory, and tend to think things through before acting. The curved slope here means that perhaps you are a little idealistic, or open to new ideas. It's also linked to your keen intuition that I mentioned before."
She paused, releasing his left hand. "Keep in mind that your left hand shows things about you from birth, where your right hand will show the changes you have made to your own fate. As such, they may contradict each other in some ways, but that means you have swayed from your path and the way the Gods have designed you, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Any further questions before we continue?"
